  • The Angelical Language Vols I & II:
The History, Mythos and Encyclopedic Lexicon
    of the Tongue of Angels

Dr. John Dee- famous Renaissance alchemist and adviser to Queen Elizabeth I- left behind several journals describing his conversations with Angels. With the help of his friend and medium, Sir Edward Kelley, the Angels delivered long sermons, magickal secrets and several texts containing the Tongue of the Angels themselves.

~ Sacred Language of the West ~

    The Angelical Language Vol I:
The History and Mythos of the Tongue of Angels

Explores the reception of the language by Dee and Kelley, and the Biblical mythology behind the language as related to them by the Angels. This book begins with an exploration of the mystical traditions that influenced Dee's work (the 50 Gates of Binah, the legends of Enoch and the Book of Soyga), and continues with an in-depth study of the 49 Tables of Loagaeth (Speech From God), the 48 Angelical Keys (or Callings) and the unfolding saga surrounding them in Dee's journals. Special added features include an analysis of the English Poetry (translations) of the 48 Keys, instructions for the magickal use of Angelical characters and a complete Angelical Psalter.

    The Angelical Language Vol II:
The Encyclopedic Lexicon of the Tongue of Angels

An exhaustive analysis of the Celestial Speech recorded by Dee. This new work is not just another "Enochian Dictionary." The Angelical Lexicon includes every word from the 48 Keys, all defined or related words from the Book of Loagaeth and every random Angelical word or phrase found throughout Dee's lengthy journals. All of the words have been analyzed and cross-referenced to discover hidden word-elements and root-words - all of which are found in this book.

Every entry in the Lexicon includes:

  • The word in English and Angelical characters.
  • Its "English sense" (definition).
  • For words from the Keys, the sentence(s) in which the word is used.
  • Its location (cross-reference numbers for words from the Keys, page-references to Dee's published journals for all other words).
  • Comparisons to every related Angelical word.
  • Notes about the word's definition, history or usage- both Dee's original marginal notations and new commentary.
  • Dee's own phonetic notations, with new commentary.

  • (Also, a new phonetic pronunciation key has been invented to make reading the words much easier.)
  • As added features, Vol II also includes an Angelical Keys Cross-Reference (containing a fully corrected version of the 48 Keys, cross-referenced by number), an in-depth analysis of Angelical Linguistics and a lengthy English to Angelical section (including tips for translating English texts into proper Angelical).

The material in The Angelical Language: Vols I and II is based strictly upon Dee's journals and personal grimoire. There are no inclusions from later mystics or organizations. This is the Angelical language in its 'purist' form.

Major thanks must go to Joseph Peterson, Geoffrey James and Ian Rons at TheMagickalReview.org: all of whom have made Dee's source material easily accessible for everyone. Plus, it is thanks to the direct aid of Mr. Peterson (and the good folks at Red Wheel/Weiser) and Mr. Rons that this new Lexicon was even possible.

Anything discussed in the book is on-topic. Download files related to the Enochian language, check out the photos (images of the alphabets and more!) and visit the best links on Angelical and Enochiana on the web!

    Aaron's Enochian Bookstore:
This is my on-line bookstore for books on Enochiana.

    The Magickal Review / Enochian:
This is truly the most awesome Enochian site on the Web! You can look at all of the original Dee Enochian manuscripts online! (Scans of Sloane and Cotton Manuscripts, plus a PDF version of Casaubon's A True and Faithful Relation....) They also have the "Kelley Angelic" font- which is the best I've seen to date. Eventually, they plan to release a huge volume containing the entire collection of Dee's Angelic journals.

    Enochian Linguistics:
"Analytical work on the properties of the Angelic language." This is the first site on the Web to focus on Dee's Angelical. It contains postings and essays from Dee scholars, taken from forums like Enochian-L and elsewhere.

The Writings of Dr. John Dee at Twilit Grotto:
As always, Joseph Peterson is top-notch on medieval and renaissance mystical scholarship. The entirety of the Book of Loagaeth is included on his CD - so buy it! ;)

    Enochian Magick Reference v. 0.8:
By Benjamin Rowe. This is the most comprehensive reference document to Dee's Angelic magick available on the web. All organized with easy-to-surf links, images of all the main tools and tables, etc.

    Enochian-L Mailing List:
During the 1990s, Enochian-L was THE place for current scholarship on John Dee's system of Angelic magick. Today it is very quiet- but many of the same people are still there and will respond to intelligent and interesting discussion.

    Useful Angelical Posts:

    Early Modern English and Angelical
An excerpt from "The Angelical Language." In order to understand Dee's Angelical, you have to understand the early-Modern (or Shakespearean) English that Dee and Kelley spoke natively. Not only are the Angelical words themselves based primarily upon early-Modern English pronunciation, but so are the phonetic notations left by Dee.

    Dee's Pronunciation Notes
This post explains my deciphering of Dee's phonetic notations for the Angelical words. This is a major aspect of my work with the language! Dee's notations have been a mystery for generations, as those Enochian scholars who have followed Dee have been largely unfamiliar with the early-Modern English in which the notations were written.

The Divine Language and the Book of Life
This post is a short introduction to the subjects of the Divine Language and the Book of Life - two concepts that were major motivations behind Dee's search for the Angelical Language and the Book of Loagaeth.

Enochian Angels and the Planets (Chaldean or Heptarchia Ordering?)
Here is another Enochian post I'm putting on this page temporarily. This one concerns Dee's Heptarchia, and the two different ordering of Planets that appear in the system.

    Enochian Hierarchies
This post to the Enochian Yahoo Group explains the Enochian hierarchies as outlined in Dee's journals. This isn't really about Angelical, but for now this is the best place for me to put this link. ;)

The Quest for the Divine Language
A short article concerning mankind's fascination with and search for the Original Language once spoken in Eden.

    Pronouncing Dee's Angelical
Based upon my study of Dee's records, I have created this essay explaining how to pronounce the Angelical words. I explain the methods Dee used to record his own phonetic notations, and then I provide an entirely new phonetic key intended for modern students. All of the rules for Angelical pronunciation are explained, and the essay ends with excerpts from An Angelical Psalter- showing the first two Angelical Callings/Keys written in English, Angelical and my new phonetic key.

    The Angelical Alphabet
This essay explains the importance of the Angelical Language and how to use the Angelical Characters with Agrippa's occult philosophy. (This has been included as an addendum within The Angelical Language Vol. I)

    Reviews:

"Leitch goes through every single conversation with every angel and "translates" into modern words what the conversations mean. I feel this was very valuable for me as I place a lot of concern on knowing exactly WHY I'm doing something before I do it."
Review by David Salisbury at www.goodreads.com.

"Aaron has set so many records straight with regards to the Enochian system of Magick that it is reasonable to say without a doubt that this is the first book to really take the practice of Enochian Magick forward in an authentic direction."
    Review by lgdvl73 at Evocationmagic.com.

"Aaron Leitch has done the field of Enochian studies a great service in producing this two-volume opus, in which he explains his research into the interworking of some of the must puzzling parts of Dee & Kelley's work."
Review by Christeos Pir at the Enochian Yahoo Group.
